4 best pizza places on the Camino Francés

I am missing the Camino this week and longing for some delicious, affordable pizza, so I thought I would share my four favorite places for pizza on the Camino Francés.

Eating on the Camino can become a bit routine, with toast for breakfast, mid-morning slices of tortilla española, the midday menú del día, and the evening menú del peregrino. Sometimes a pilgrim simply wants something, well, different.

PIZZA!!!

Consider this an edible Spanish lesson . . .

These are listed in order from east to west, not necessarily in the order of fabulousness. (Although if they weren’t fabulous, they wouldn’t be on this list.)

1. La Tagliatella, Pamplona

This is a chain restaurant (read: consistent) with locations in Pamplona, Logroño, and Santiago. The pizza is all super-thin crust – just the right amount of food for one person – with lots of choices of tasty toppings.

My favorites are the vegetarian Melanzana (tomate, mozzarella, berenjena, parmigiano reggiano, miel y crema balsámica) and the Tartufi e funghi (crema de trufa negra, champiñones y selección de quesos).

Not everyone in your party up for pizza? No problem, because they also serve antipasti, salads, and pasta, plus desserts.

Open the usual Spanish meal hours. Reservations recommended on the weekends.

Check out the menu on their website. Find them in Pamplona here.

2. Rock & Roll Pizza, La Portela

New York style pizza, by way of Southern California, served on the Camino Francés. The perfect combination! Located at the Vagabond Vieiras albergue, which is also run by American David and Danish Keira.

Pizza is served nightly for the pilgrims who stay in the albergue, and weekend evenings for anyone staying – or living – close by. Salads, plus meat, vegetarian, and vegan pizza options available, plus for a real treat, don’t miss the chocolate con churros for breakfast the next morning.

Check out the menu on their website, and here’s where to find them.

3. Pizzeria L’isola Che Non C’è, Foncebadón

Pizza on a mountain, made right in front of your eyes, enjoyed while hanging out with your fellow pilgrims and albergue bunk mates? Yes please! (The owner runs an albergue, too.) Thin crust, lots of choices, best enjoyed right out of the oven.

They don’t seem to have a website, but here’s where to find them.

4. Il Fornaccio, Arzúa

Delicious rectangular shaped pizzas plus salads, desserts, and drinks. Get your own mediana pizza or share a grande with a friend or two. And don’t be surprised to see the locals at the next table – this place is popular!

Here’s their menu, and here’s where to find them.

Open Thursday through Monday for lunch and dinner and Wednesday for dinner only. Closed on Tuesdays.

Full disclosure: this isn’t an exhaustive list of great pizza on the Camino Francés – just my favorites. Do you have a favorite? I’d love to hear about it! nancy@thecaminoexperience.com
