In episode 10 of the “YOU on the Camino” podcast, Starting Points on the Camino Francés, I mentioned a bunch of websites that I use to plan my travel to, from, and along the Camino. I also talked about where to get your Credential, the ever-interesting history of the Knights Templar on the Camino, and where to leave your trekking poles or walking stick in Santiago. This page has all those websites.
Here you go . . .
To find flights to major European cities and those smaller cities closest to the most likely starting points, I use:
-
- Matrixitasoftware: https://matrix.itasoftware.com/search
Once I have found an itinerary I like, I then go to the airline’s website to buy the ticket. Note that budget airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet don’t show up on the Matrix search.
To find train timetables and fares within Spain I use:
-
- Renfe: https://www.renfe.com/es/en
To find buses within Spain and from Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied de Port:
-
- Alsa bus: https://www.alsa.com/en/web/bus/home
- Jimenez bus: https://jimenezmovilidad.es/ (the website is Spanish only; one bus a day from Madrid Airport to Pamplona, Logroño, and Burgos)
To find the bus from Pamplona to Roncesvalles:
-
- Autocares Artiedas: https://www.autocaresartieda.com/
To pre-arrange a taxi from Pamplona to Roncesvalles or Saint Jean Pied de Port:
-
- Taxi Pamplona: https://taxipamplona.com/en/the-way/
To find train timetables and fares within France and from Paris to Bayonne:
-
- SNCF Connect: https://www.sncf-connect.com/app/en-en/home/search
If you get frustrated with the above websites for trains and buses, try this website:
-
- Omio: https://www.omio.com/
To pre-arrange for transportation from the Biarritz airport to Saint Jean Pied de Port*:
-
- Express Bourricot: https://www.expressbourricot.com/
- Le Napoléon Compostelle: https://www.napoleon-compostelle.fr/en/
*These companies also provide luggage transport from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Refuge Orisson and the first few stops within Spain.
